Montverde Academy defended its GEICO Nationals crown on Saturday afternoon, knocking out Link Academy with a final score of 60-49 for its second consecutive title.
The sixth championship of the Montverde Academy under the legendary head coach Kevin Boyle. The girls team at the Montverde Academy won the girl’s GEICO Nationals early Saturday, making it a clean sweep for the school.
Five-star Texas signer Dillon Mitchell and owner Renew led the way with double-doubles. Mitchell finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while registering 14 points and 12 rebounds on the way to an unexpected renewed victory.
“It’s exciting,” Renew told ESPN Postgame. “We went through a lot of ups and downs at the beginning of the season. We thought everything was going downhill. We really picked it up and you can see it right now. We have won a national championship. “
Five-star Duke signing Darik Whitehead has not only dominated the semi-finals against IMG Academy, but has been able to influence the game in a number of ways – especially as a distributor. The Montverde academy has assisted in 16 of his 24 field goals and has been the primary contributor to Whitehead.
Link Academy got off to a strong start and made things harder at Montverde Academy in the first half. Montverde fell into a groove in the second half, though, and quickly extended the game to add to his jam-packed trophy case.
“It’s up to who wants more,” Mitchell said. “The whole game I was telling them, ‘This is our last game of high school basketball. Last 16 minutes. Give us everything we have. ‘ So we went there and fought. ”
