Junior NBA Action has started another gear in Abu Dhabi on the second weekend of thrilling action.

In the boys competition, Horizon Private School (Philadelphia 76ers) lost 24-15 to Summit International School (Boston Celtics) at the American Community School in Abu Dhabi. But the scoreline only tells part of the story.

Winner Zakaria Yahya Mari was able to score two-thirds (18/24) of his team’s points, where Omar Amir Ismail was on fire with 14 points out of 15 points.

James Magno won the man-of-the-match honor when Abu Dhabi International Private School MBZ (Utah Jazz) lost to Philippine Global School Team B (Oklahoma City Thunder) 21-8. He was satisfied with his personal achievement and wanted to “have fun” again in the next game.

He says: “Honestly, it’s amazing, because I didn’t expect to do well against a very good team, so I’m grateful to be a player of the game and I hope we have fun in the next game.”

In the girls’ tournament, Cranleigh School (Washington Wizards) won their second consecutive match – this time our own English school (Atlanta Hawks) 48-4. It was the same story for Summit International School (Memphis Grizzlies) who won 20-3 against ADNOC School, Abu Dhabi (New Orleans Pelicans).

The Junior NBA is part of a groundbreaking, multi-year partnership between the NBA and the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi). It aims to teach young people the basics of the game, as well as promote teamwork, respect, determination and community values.

Winners – covering 72 games, including play-offs – will have the opportunity to watch the October Ground Breaking Live NBA pre-season matches in the UAE capital. Scouts will also choose a boy and a girl for a lifetime of basketball training experience at the NBA summer camp in Europe.

More than 450 players have registered for the 30-team event, which is divided into 20 boys ‘teams and 10 girls’ teams, ending with the Junior NBA Finals on May 21. Branded playing kits were provided by the NBA for six divisions, five teams in each.
