Near WrestleMania, Sport360 contacts Drew McIntyre and talks about his thoughts and aspirations for the future before the show.
Here’s what he had to say …
Q: What is Dallas like when everyone manages to get together under the WWE umbrella? How does it feel to get everyone together again?
Drew: That’s awesome! This seems to be the biggest reunion of all time, bringing everyone in the company back together. It’s incredible for all the fans from all over the world to travel to the same place again and enjoy the thing that we all love the most. Two years ago, we had an epic WrestleMania where no one was, had limited power and no one traveled. But this year, we’re back to normal with people from all over the world, and potentially 100,000 people will go there every night on the weekends. I’m really going to do it.
Q: You’ve been out of the title fight since losing to Lashley, so after WrestleMania, would it be a goal to focus on the title again?
Drew: Absolutely. That’s the number one goal at all! It’s been so long since I competed for the Heavyweight Championship, so it’s definitely in my sights. When I was drafted on SmackDown, my eyes were on the Universal Championship. But I realized and I was perfectly fine to do whatever it took to get that opportunity. It’s not like Roman will offer it to me with a jump when he knows what I’m capable of these days – we’ve all seen what happened in the Survivor Series in 2020.
When the whole family got involved, I bent down and held my breath. He (Roman) knows for sure what Drew McIntyre is capable of doing these days compared to our wars in the past. And as I said, I will start from the bottom, fight with everyone and I will work my way up.
At this stage of my career I realize that I don’t need everything. Now, I am 52 weeks-a-year product, my age is 36 years. I have many years left in my career and I am just spending my time, building my victory, waiting for my moment. We got this huge match with Roman vs Brock in the title match at WrestleMania and I can assure you, I have my eyes on who will win that match because I am coming for them.
Q: This is going to be your seventh WrestleMania now, and your resume on the show is pretty great. You were the main event with Brock Lesnar, you were the first WWE superstar to perform in front of fans in the epidemic era when you took Bobby Lashley. Even at WrestleMania 26 there is a Money in the Bank ladder match, so almost every major thing you can do at WrestleMania is ticked. Do you still get that excitement, that nervousness and those goosebumps during WrestleMania season?
Drew: Yes, sure. I get excitement and gossip bumps for all the weekend shows, even the ones that aren’t seen on television. So of course, for WrestleMania, I’ve already mentioned that we’re going back to the way WrestleMania is supposed to be. I know how many people will be there, I know our most passionate fans from all over the world travel to gather and bring that energy. I know how loud it will be, so I’m absolutely buzzing to hear the excitement in the street and the excitement in the yard. I don’t know, since I’m back from a WWE match, it might seem interesting, I wrestled Roman at my first WrestleMania and I wrestled with Lesnar, Lashley and Corbin.
A lot of people might say “well, one of these isn’t like the other”, but at the same time, the rest of the matches were more about glory and championship. Big Roman, competing with a top superstar and probably more than just the title.
But with Corbin, it’s different, because he tried to take me out earlier in the year.
It’s a personal one and I’m very much planning to either take them out quickly or embarrass them or drag the beating for so long and really embarrass him. I’ve been studying past matches with Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold or The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels. I’m studying Vince McMahon vs. Bret Hart from WrestleMania 26 where it was a really long, uncomfortable 40 minutes. These are definitely inspirations.
Q: The second anniversary of the first lockdown has recently passed across a large part of the world. To many people, you will be the symbol of that time. Thank you for winning your great title. I know emotionally and in terms of personal moments, the title may not be the situation you imagined or you grew up dreaming of that moment. But it’s quite a legacy when you think about the mark you’re leaving, isn’t it?
Drew: I’ve talked a lot about this and not what I dreamed of as a child, because who on earth would dream of winning a title and the main event of WrestleMania would not be in front of anyone. No one could predict when we would be living, especially at that particular moment, at that particular time, at that particular weekend when the epidemic was at its height and everyone around the world was really scared. We didn’t know what was happening. All other sports entertainment companies shut down, but WWE went ahead. And I was the main event, you know, I was a part of the good feeling story and I could take people’s minds away from what was happening. And seeing the response means the world to me.
We have really made a lot of people happy and I know this because I have seen the number increase on social media by 60% from the previous year. I’ve talked to people countless times now, personally through virtual and I wanted them to tell me how hard things were for them and how WWE letting them escape can literally save people’s lives.
People in tears told me that this was the thing that made me realize how important what we had done during that time was and that I would never take it back. I was so proud of it. When WrestleMania finally comes and goes, people remember those moments of WrestleMania, and if you’re lucky, people will remember it for months to come. But as the product continues, so does the machine. Those moments may end in a video package or on a network or even a martyr, but the reality is that no one will forget WrestleMania when the world was still and Drew McIntyre won the title.
Q: Apart from your own matches, which match on the current confirmed WrestleMania card excites you the most?
Drew: Well, of course there are a few. I have my eye on Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns. Obviously, I want to see who wins because then I will shoot for them.
We also got Charlotte Flair at the event, and I know it would be amazing to see her because she always does some big-time performances on the biggest stage. He is such an incredible athlete. He then fights against Rhonda Rossi who is an incredible athlete, and he has also had success in those big time matches so it’s going to be fun to watch.
For Becky vs. Bianca, Becky just did one of my favorite promos on RAW last Monday, with Bianca who came into her own and such a superstar.
He is such an extraordinary athlete and so these two together will create magic.
Q: From WrestleMania Sunday to the title merger between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns, do you think we’ll both win the championship? And you want to face the winner for both titles?
Drew: Yes, whoever wins. I definitely want to deal with them but I can’t guess who will win. For my first WWE Championship at WrestleMania 36, I got history with both of them beating Brock, although Roman was always my cryptonite and I could never beat him. I came close during the Survivor Series 2020 Champion vs. Champion, but got caught up in the whistle during less injury.
But Roman knows what I’m capable of doing nowadays.
I am thrilled to see the winner and Brock he is not the same Brock – his cowboy Brock is somehow even more terrified at this moment, when he comes out and he laughs, and has a good time. He just destroys everyone and runs into them and it’s more terrible than the angry Brock. I’m curious to see who is going to be the winner, and I’m going to see it as everyone else as a fan. At the same time, after that match, whoever is standing there with these two titles, I’m going to shoot for them.
Q: This year’s main event, Raines vs. Lesnar. This is arguably the biggest match of all time and seems to be in the shadow of all the other cards. Do you believe that you can reach that level and how do you plan to reach that level?
Drew: Yeah, I believe I can go there. 100%. I can lie and say, “It’s going to be this year”, but it won’t be because the superstars are involved, ready for the match and Roman and both have years and years of equity brok. Honestly, none of the brands can touch it right now. This is the biggest match we have ever seen. At the moment, both are in the title line. This build up makes it the biggest match of all time and that’s exactly what it is. And when we look at all the features of both superstars, you can argue that if a match was big in the past, it would be a silly branding thing to look like the second biggest match of all time.
And it could be controversial to call it the time of the biggest match because the superstars are involved because of the title in the line. Obviously, I’m watching with everyone else, not only as I said before, to determine who wins and who I’m going to, but also to find out what I need to do to reach their level.
The progress I have made over the last few years, I will keep getting those delegates and look at the studies of both of those superstars and find out how they got to where they are right now.
Q: What does WrestleMania mean to you and what are your expectations for this great event?
Drew: WrestleMania means everything. This is the biggest show of the year. We all work towards it, hoping to stay healthy all year long from the day after WrestleMania, to be lucky enough to have a match at WrestleMania.
It’s a dream come true for superstars like me who always wanted to be in WWE as a kid.
Always dreaming of being part of WrestleMania in any power. Everyone, including me, is buzzing about this year’s WrestleMania.
My expectations of the match are much higher. I’m not sure if this is a good idea, but I’m not sure if this is a good idea, but I’m not sure if this is a good idea, but I’m not sure if this is a good idea.
In reality, he is 6 feet 7 ‘tall and weighs about 300 pounds. As a former footballer, he is willing to do whatever it takes to win. He has now experienced that he has been around for years and the biggest thing is those physical features. That he is a terrible man, this confidence at the moment because he is undefeated as “Happy Corbin”. There is a difference in his confidence because he is in the role.
Her confidence is matched by her physical ability, although she seems to be afraid of Drew McIntyre, and there’s always a danger that I’m going to have a game plan. I’m going to embarrass him, and I have high expectations even after the match.
